Back in the early 2000s, engineers at the Techint Group stumbled upon a fascinating phenomenon while working on an electric arc furnace. During their experiments, they noticed carbon electrodes growing larger instead of breaking down, which revealed a unique process called pyrolysis - essentially burning something without oxygen. This unexpected reaction split methane into pure hydrogen and pure carbon, a discovery that was initially documented and then forgotten.

Two decades later, this overlooked experiment has become the foundation for a promising clean energy solution. Tulum Energy has developed a method to produce hydrogen from methane without generating carbon dioxide emissions. What sets them apart from competitors is their ability to perform this process without expensive catalysts, using a modified version of an existing industrial technology.

The startup recently secured $27 million in seed funding, attracting investments from notable venture capital firms including TDK Ventures and CDP Venture Capital. Their plan involves building a pilot plant in Mexico adjacent to an existing steel plant, with the potential to generate two tons of hydrogen and 600 tons of carbon daily.

Perhaps most exciting is their projected production cost. Tulum aims to produce hydrogen at approximately $1.50 per kilogram in the United States - just 50 cents more than current natural gas-derived hydrogen methods. This competitive pricing, combined with zero carbon emissions, positions them as a potentially transformative player in the clean energy landscape.

As the world continues searching for sustainable energy solutions, Tulum Energy’s story demonstrates how innovation can emerge from careful observation, persistence, and a willingness to revisit seemingly forgotten research.
