Nestled near Santa Clara University, a unique small business is reimagining the cafe experience by blending adorable felines, rich Korean culture, and delectable coffee. Nabi Cat Cafe, founded by Korean American sisters-in-law Christine Hedeen and Ailee Kim, offers Bay Area locals a warm, inviting space that celebrates their cultural heritage.

The cafe’s name, “Nabi,” which means butterfly in Korean and is also a common nickname for stray cats, reflects the founders’ passion for creating a welcoming environment. With pastel and butter-yellow walls, the space feels instantly comfortable and inviting. Guests can enjoy Korean-inspired drinks and pastries while interacting with playful kittens in a dedicated lounge area.

Unique beverage offerings showcase the depth of Korean culinary traditions. The yakgwa einspanner drink infuses the cinnamon and brown sugar flavors of a traditional Korean honey cookie, while the Jeju matcha latte draws inspiration from the island’s renowned green tea. The Jolly Pong cereal latte, based on a popular Korean puffed-grain snack, adds another layer of cultural exploration.

For $28, visitors receive an hour-long cat lounge pass and a cafe drink, providing an immersive experience that goes beyond typical coffee shop encounters. The cafe has quickly become a local favorite, typically operating at 90-95% capacity since its March 3rd opening.

Employee Emily Rousseau notes the cafe’s relaxed atmosphere, describing it as “less stressful compared to other cafes” and appreciating the opportunity to interact with cats during breaks. Repeat customer Sufia Ainechi praises the establishment’s customer service and cultural authenticity.

Beyond serving delicious drinks and providing feline companionship, Nabi Cat Cafe represents a broader mission of cultural sharing and community building. Co-founder Ailee Kim hopes to inspire other small businesses to celebrate their unique cultural backgrounds, stating, “We want to further our kindness and help other small businesses get started in their journeys”.

This innovative cafe demonstrates how thoughtful entrepreneurship can create spaces that are not just commercial establishments, but vibrant cultural experiences that bring people together.
