If you’ve been soaking up those unseasonably warm Easter weekend vibes with temps in the 80s across San Francisco and Oakland, buckle up, Mother Nature’s about to hit the reset button.
Starting Monday, the Bay Area is in for a pretty dramatic weather shift. We’re talking a substantial change in the pattern, according to meteorologist Rachel Kennedy from the National Weather Service. Those warm, sunny days? They’re about to take a nosedive as cooler temperatures roll in throughout the week.
By Thursday and Friday, most areas around the region will see highs dropping into the 60s and low 70s. That’s when the rain starts making its comeback. Kennedy says we can expect light, beneficial rain stretching from Thursday through Sunday, the kind of spring shower weather that actually helps gardens and local watersheds recover.
The rain won’t be a total downpour, though. Most areas along the Bay shoreline and lower elevation spots will see around a quarter inch of rain. But if you’re in the hills, you might get hit a bit harder. The North Bay mountains, East Bay Hills, and Santa Cruz mountains could see between three quarters of an inch to a full inch of rainfall. Some areas could even see up to three quarters of an inch at lower elevations, depending on where exactly you’re located.
Here’s where it gets interesting: there’s also a potential for thunderstorms to develop, with the highest chance hitting Friday afternoon, especially in interior areas of the East Bay, South Bay, and Central Coast. So if you’re planning outdoor activities this weekend, maybe have a backup plan ready.
The weather shift is actually good news for the region. After months of dealing with fire risk and dry conditions that plague California, spring rain is essential for replenishing water supplies and easing drought concerns. It’s the kind of weather pattern we need, even if it means trading those perfect 80-degree days for cooler, wetter conditions.
Looking ahead beyond this wet weekend, the National Weather Service is tracking the possibility of more low-pressure systems moving through the region over the next couple of weeks. Translation: this rainy pattern might stick around for a bit longer. So yeah, invest in a good umbrella and waterproof jacket if you haven’t already. The Bay Area’s got some serious spring cleaning to do, and Mother Nature’s ready to help with the job.
