The Susac Brothers Just Made Baseball History at Oracle Park

You know it’s September baseball when you have shadows like this at AT&T Park.

There’s something magical about watching a dream come true in front of your family. On Thursday night at Oracle Park, 24-year-old Daniel Susac made his first major-league at-bat count in a way most rookies only dream about, and his older brother Andrew was there to witness the whole thing.

Daniel smacked a single to right-center off the Mets’ David Peterson in his debut, going 3-for-3 with a walk in a 7-2 Giants victory. But here’s where it gets wild: twelve years earlier, almost to the day, Andrew Susac, now 36 and a former Giants catcher himself, hit a single off Pittsburgh’s Charlie Morton in his own first major-league hit back in 2014. Same ballpark. Same team. Same position. The baseball gods were definitely showing off.

Both brothers came from the same Jesuit High School in Carmichael, just outside Sacramento, and both made their MLB debuts as Giants catchers at Oracle Park. When Daniel’s first hit cleared the infield, the cameras panned to the Susac family in the stands absolutely losing it. After the game wrapped, Andrew joined Daniel on the field for photos and congratulations, a full-circle moment that had the whole family celebrating together.

“Little better than my debut”, Andrew told reporters with a grin, remembering his own 1-for-4 performance in his fourth game back in 2014. Andrew went on to win a World Series ring with the Giants that year and played parts of six major-league seasons. Now, he’s giving baseball lessons in Roseville and enjoying fatherhood, but seeing his little brother achieve this dream hit different.

Andrew had texted Daniel earlier Thursday with a simple message: “Attack and attack early, and be confident in yourself”. Daniel’s response was just as straightforward: “Yessir”. The advice clearly worked.

Daniel, who came to the Giants through December’s Rule 5 draft after being an Oakland A’s prospect, had been imagining this moment since childhood. “I always envisioned it as a little kid”, he said after the game. “Actually living it out, it’s awesome. I went through this exact same scenario in my backyard with the brothers”.

What made the night even more memorable? Daniel pulled off an ABS (automatic ball-strike) challenge in the sixth inning to turn a ball-four call into strike three on Luis Robert Jr., a technological tool that didn’t even exist when Andrew was playing. When asked what he’d remember most years from now, Daniel smiled and said, “Probably the ABS challenge”. You can’t make this stuff up.

The Susac family made the trip hoping to celebrate Daniel’s first hit, and it happened exactly when they got their chance. Andrew’s young son Luke, decked out in a mini Giants jersey with SUSAC on the back, got to experience the magic firsthand. That’s three generations of Susac baseball history on display at Oracle Park.
