This 24-Year-Old Giants Catcher Just Did Something We Haven't Seen in 50 Years

Daniel Susac is having the kind of rookie start that makes baseball fans lose their minds. The 24-year-old catcher for the San Francisco Giants made his MLB debut on April 2 against the New York Mets and immediately showed why the team was excited to bring him on board.

In that first game, Susac went absolutely off, collecting three hits and a walk in four plate appearances. That alone would’ve been impressive, but he wasn’t done yet. He followed it up with two more hits on Tuesday night in a dominant 6-0 Giants victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, giving him five consecutive hits to start his career. Yep, five for five. That’s the kind of thing that happens once in a generation.

Here’s where it gets really wild: Susac is the first Giants player since 1974 to record a hit in his first five career at-bats. We’re talking about a 52-year streak that he just ended. And get this, he’s only the second player in all of Major League Baseball to accomplish this feat since 1977, when Ted Cox did it for the Boston Red Sox. That’s how rare this actually is.

Susac’s path to the Giants is pretty interesting too. He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 2022, but the Minnesota Twins selected him in the Rule 5 Draft last December. The Giants then traded for him, and honestly, it looks like they made a smart move. The dude is clearly ready for the big leagues.

What makes this even more significant is how Susac’s hot start contrasts with the Giants’ other catching options. Patrick Bailey, who’s supposed to be the team’s everyday starter behind the plate, has been struggling big time. Through his first games, Bailey is hitting just .129 with only four hits in 31 at-bats. Meanwhile, Susac already has six hits and is clearly making a statement that he deserves playing time.

The baseball world is watching this kid closely. When a rookie comes in and performs at this level, especially as a catcher, a position that typically takes time to develop at the professional level, it signals something special. Susac isn’t just having a good first week; he’s making history. Fans at Oracle Park and Giants management alike have to be thrilled about what they’re seeing. If Susac can maintain even a fraction of this momentum, he could become a cornerstone of the Giants’ future. The kid came into 2026 and immediately announced his presence with authority.
