Recent data from the California Student Aid Commission reveals that approximately 340,000 high school seniors completed financial aid applications, marking an impressive 11% increase from last year.

The state’s proactive approach, driven by a 2021 law mandating high schools to ensure seniors complete financial aid applications, is yielding remarkable results. By completing these applications, students unlock potential grants worth $22,000 or more in their first year of college, a game-changing opportunity for many families.

Interestingly, the data also highlights a promising trend among students from mixed-status families. Despite previous concerns about immigration-related barriers, over 69,000 high school seniors from these households completed their Federal Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA), surpassing expectations and previous years’ numbers.

California is investing heavily in making higher education accessible, with approximately $2.9 billion allocated for student financial aid in the 2025-26 budget. This commitment has already enabled more than half of California residents to attend public universities tuition-free.

The state’s comprehensive support system includes over 1,200 workshops and training for more than 16,000 professionals dedicated to helping students navigate the financial aid application process.
