Bi-Rite's Next Move: A Fourth Location is Coming to the Outer Richmond

Joseph's Bi-Rite Market

Bi-Rite Market, San Francisco’s beloved (and let’s be real, pricey) gourmet grocery spot, is officially expanding again. The local favorite has just secured a new space on California Street in the Outer Richmond, which means you’ll soon have a fourth location to drop serious money on organic produce and artisanal cheese.

The newest Bi-Rite will be taking over the building at 6001 California Street (at 22nd Avenue), which formerly housed the 6001 California Market. You might recognize the vintage aesthetic from the neon “Appel & Dietrich Fine Food Market” sign still hanging on the corner, and honestly, that retro vibe fits perfectly with Bi-Rite’s whole aesthetic. The company has built its reputation by claiming historic, standalone neighborhood retail spaces, so this location checks all the boxes.

As for when it’ll actually open? That’s still TBD. Bi-Rite hasn’t officially confirmed the news or announced a timeline, though the word on the street is it could happen sometime this year or next. If you’re familiar with how Bi-Rite moves, don’t hold your breath. The Divisadero location took three full years from announcement to opening, and the Polk Street store took two years to materialize after the initial buzz. So patience is definitely required here.

The building itself is pretty solid for retail operations. Marketing materials show it’s got 3,481 square feet on the main floor, another 3,375 square feet in the basement, and a 645-square-foot mezzanine. That extra storage space could seriously help with inventory management, something the other locations handle through garage rentals and similar workarounds.

Location-wise, this new spot is already surrounded by excellent food options. You’ve got Pearl 6101 and Pizzetta 211 just a block away, plus Violet’s, Fiorella, and Angelina’s Deli Cafe all in the neighborhood. It’s basically a gourmet cluster, which makes total sense for a Bi-Rite expansion.

Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Bi-Rite is expensive. Like, really expensive. A recent San Francisco Chronicle price survey found that Bi-Rite costs roughly double what you’d pay at Trader Joe’s for the same items. But if you value locally sourced, organic produce, curated wine and cheese selections, and quality grab-and-go options, it’s become a neighborhood staple since owner Sam Mogannam took over the original 18th Street location back in 1998.

Mogannam has always positioned Bi-Rite as the anti-corporate grocery experience, a neighborhood market where people actually want to shop daily and run into their neighbors. Whether the Outer Richmond location maintains that community feel remains to be seen, but given the area’s existing food scene, the chances look pretty good.
