Bay FC is starting fresh with a new leader at the helm, and head coach Emma Coates is already making waves in the Bay Area. The former England U-19 and U-23 women’s coach was brought in by general manager Kay Cossington to completely reshape the club’s direction after a rough 2025 season that saw them finish in last place. Now, just over three months into her tenure, Coates is gearing up for the team’s season-opener this Saturday against Denver Summit FC at PayPal Park in San Jose, and she’s got some serious optimism about what’s ahead.

Coates recently sat down with the “Section 415” podcast to dive deeper into her vision for Bay FC and what fans can expect to see on the pitch. Coming from England to the Bay Area is a major career move, and she’s already navigating the unique challenges that come with building a winning team in a new country. The transition hasn’t been easy, but Coates is determined to prove she was the right choice to lead this franchise back to respectability.

One of the biggest reasons for excitement is the arrival of USWNT star Claire Hutton, who has the potential to completely transform Bay FC’s attack. Hutton brings elite-level experience and skill that should elevate the entire team’s performance. Beyond the headline signing, Coates has also added new talent like Keira Barry and Anouk Denton to the roster, both of whom are expected to make immediate impacts.

The pressure is definitely on. Bay FC’s 2025 campaign was a disaster, finishing at the bottom of the league standings. Fans are eager to see real improvement, and ownership clearly believes Coates is the person who can deliver it. In many ways, she’s like other ambitious professionals who’ve moved to the Bay Area with big expectations, except instead of disrupting tech, she’s trying to disrupt women’s soccer in Northern California.

Coates’ background coaching elite youth teams in England shows she knows how to develop players and build a winning culture. Now she has to prove that success translates to the professional level in a new league. The podcast appearance gives her a chance to connect with Bay Area sports fans who may not be familiar with her background or what she’s trying to accomplish with the club.

With the season opener just around the corner, all eyes will be on how Bay FC performs against Denver. Coates has had a few months to implement her system and get the team functioning as a cohesive unit. The improvements might not be dramatic overnight, but this is the beginning of what she hopes will be a long-term turnaround project.
