Just weeks after making history as the first American woman in 24 years to snag Olympic gold, Alysa Liu is ready to bring her championship energy back to her Bay Area roots. The 20-year-old Oakland native will headline Stars on Ice at SAP Center on May 17, marking her first time skating in front of home crowds since her incredible run at the Milan-Cortina Games.
If you’ve been following Liu’s journey, you know this moment hits different. She’s not just any skater, she’s the person who reminded the entire country that American women can absolutely dominate on the world’s biggest ice skating stage. And now she’s coming home to celebrate with the people who’ve been rooting for her all along.
The lineup is seriously stacked. Liu’s bringing her crew, the self-proclaimed “Blade Angels,” which includes fellow Olympic competitors Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito. Yes, they actually came up with that nickname as a playful nod to Charlie’s Angels and Blades of Glory, and honestly, it’s pretty fitting. All three were part of the U.S. team that won gold in team skating at the Games, so you know the energy is going to be incredible.
But wait, there’s more. The show also features Ilia Malinin, the four-time U.S. champion known as the “Quad God” for his insane quad jumps and backflips that basically defy physics. Plus, ice dance duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates will be part of the lineup. This isn’t just a skating show, it’s a celebration of some of the best athletes in the sport right now.
Liu’s been soaking up the Bay Area love since her Olympic victory. She’s getting a special ceremony from the City of Oakland this Thursday at Frank Ogawa Plaza, and she’s already been spotted around the region enjoying some downtime. She wisely skipped the World Championships happening later this month in Prague, which is honestly the smart move after the intensity of the Games. The girl deserves a break and time to celebrate her massive accomplishment.
The Stars on Ice tour kicks off April 16 near Fort Myers, Florida and runs through the end of May, hitting various cities including the San Jose date. Tickets are already on sale at StarsOnIce.com, and if you’re a Bay Area figure skating fan, or just someone who loves watching incredible athletes do impossible things on ice, this is the event to catch. There’s something special about watching someone from your community reach the absolute pinnacle of their sport and then come back home to share that moment with you. That’s what May 17 is all about.
