Dre Greenlaw Is Coming Home to the 49ers and Bay Area Football Fans Should Be Hyped

The 49ers just pulled off a move that has Bay Area fans buzzing again. Dre Greenlaw, one of the team’s most beloved defensive players from the past six seasons, is officially back in red and gold after spending exactly one season with the Denver Broncos. According to reports from NFL Media, Greenlaw signed a one-year deal worth $7.5 million to rejoin San Francisco, and honestly, this feels like the kind of full-circle moment that makes sports worth caring about.

Last offseason was rough for Niners fans. Greenlaw’s departure to Denver hit different, he signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Broncos, and it felt like the end of an era. But the NFL waits for no one, and after just one season in Denver, the Broncos released him on Thursday morning. Within hours, Greenlaw was back where he belonged.

What makes this reunion so significant is the leadership and experience Greenlaw brings back to a linebacker group that got absolutely demolished by injuries last season. The 49ers had built one of the league’s most dominant linebacker duos with Greenlaw and All-Pro Fred Warner, and that chemistry matters. But 2025 was a nightmare year for the defense. Warner went down in Week 6 with a broken and dislocated ankle that ended his season. His replacement, Tatum Bethune, also suffered a season-ending injury before the playoffs hit, forcing the team to scramble with veteran signings like Kyzir White and Garrett Wallow just to have bodies on the field.

Dee Winters actually stepped up and showed some real potential in his third season with the team, looking capable of filling that void left by Greenlaw. But potential only goes so far when your entire linebacker corps is getting injured left and right. That’s where Greenlaw’s return becomes crucial. He’s not just a veteran presence, he’s the kind of player who brings a winning mentality and the “dog mentality” that defense-first teams need.

For Warner, who’s been the backbone of this defense, having his best friend and right-hand man back on the field changes everything. These two had that natural chemistry that you can’t manufacture or teach. They knew how to work together, how to trust each other in the chaos of game day, and how to elevate everyone around them.

The 49ers are still building back their defense after a brutal season, but getting Greenlaw back is a statement. It says the organization is serious about putting together a competitive unit again. With Warner healthy and Greenlaw providing that veteran leadership, the linebacker corps could actually be a strength again instead of a liability.

For fans who watched Greenlaw become a cornerstone of the defense over six seasons, this homecoming feels right. Sometimes players leave, and sometimes they find their way back. Greenlaw’s story is just beginning its next chapter, and it’s happening right here in the Bay.
