49ers' Deommodore Lenoir's Awkward Reunion with Coach Robert Saleh

2024 Jets vs Titans HCs Robert Saleh & Brian Callahan

In the world of professional football, awkward moments can happen even between the most seasoned players and coaches. Such was the case when San Francisco 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir found himself face-to-face with returning defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

Lenoir, recipient of the 2025 Dwight Clark Legacy Award, revealed a hilarious backstory during a recent event. During a game against the New York Jets, he had passionately screamed at Saleh after making a significant play. When Saleh returned to the 49ers’ coaching staff in January, Lenoir was initially nervous about how his former coach would remember their interaction.

To his surprise, Saleh not only remembered the moment but brought it up during their first team meeting. The interaction highlights the intense and personal dynamics that exist within professional sports teams.

Saleh’s journey back to the 49ers is noteworthy. After being fired from the Jets just five games into the 2024 season, he worked as a consultant with the Green Bay Packers before returning to San Francisco. The 49ers welcomed him back to fill a crucial spot on Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff.

Despite the initial awkwardness, Lenoir speaks positively about Saleh’s return. “He’s a very energetic person,” Lenoir shared. “The energy he’s going to bring to the room, that he’s already bringing to the room, he’s putting a lot of confidence in the secondary and us”.

The 49ers opened their 2024 season with a victory against Saleh’s Jets, winning 32-19 at Levi’s Stadium. Lenoir himself had an impressive performance with four tackles, three solo, and one pass defensed.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, this moment serves as a reminder that professional relationships in sports are complex, dynamic, and sometimes unexpectedly humorous.
