In a bold move to support wildfire survivors, Governor Gavin Newsom has significantly expanded mortgage relief for California homeowners impacted by recent disasters. The state’s CalAssist Mortgage Fund will now provide up to 12 months of mortgage assistance, quadrupling its previous support and offering up to $100,000 in relief.
The expanded program comes as a lifeline for families like Sonia Linares from Altadena, who lost her home during the 2025 fires. “The help I received eased a huge amount of stress during an incredibly difficult time,” Linares shared, highlighting the critical nature of this financial support.
Under the new guidelines, more families can now qualify for assistance. Income limits have been raised, with Los Angeles County households earning up to $281,400 annually now eligible for support. This expansion means hundreds of families struggling to rebuild after devastating wildfires will receive substantial financial breathing room.
The state is also developing a proposed state-backed rebuilding program to help homeowners access construction loans more easily. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between insurance payouts and the actual cost of reconstruction, providing additional support for survivors.
While California steps up to support its residents, the state has criticized the federal government’s slow response. Governor Newsom continues to call for immediate disaster aid, emphasizing that recovery requires comprehensive support from all levels of government.
For Aurora Barboza Flores, another Altadena resident, the expanded relief represents hope. “If you ask any Altadena resident who’s rebuilding, the cost is really our biggest stressor,” she explained. “This decision tells us there is a conscious effort to help us rebuild”.
Homeowners affected by qualifying disasters are encouraged to apply for the program. Applications are free, and funds are paid directly to mortgage servicers without requiring repayment. For more information, residents can visit the CalAssist Mortgage Fund website or call 800-501-0019.
As California continues to face increasing climate challenges, this mortgage relief program demonstrates the state’s commitment to supporting communities in their most vulnerable moments.
