Apple's Refusing to Let the iPhone Die, and Honestly? We're Here for It

Apple just hit its 50th birthday, and while the company has always been allergic to looking backward, they’re finally letting loose with some celebrations. But instead of just reminiscing about the good old days, the tech giant is doubling down on one wild prediction: the iPhone is going to be around for another 50 years.
Yeah, you read that right. During interviews with Apple’s top brass, including marketing SVP Greg Joswiak and hardware engineering SVP John Ternus, the company made it crystal clear that they’re not treating the iPhone as some legacy product that’s about to fade away. When asked directly if people will still be using iPhones in 2076, Joswiak basically said, “It’s hard to imagine not”. He went on to explain that while competitors are scrambling to figure out what comes next, Apple has an advantage because, well, they already have the iPhone.
Now, here’s where it gets spicy. The AI revolution is happening right now, and a lot of people think Apple missed the boat. The company’s legendary design guru Jony Ive is literally working with OpenAI to build AI-specific devices, and there are tons of other companies racing to create hardware designed from the ground up for artificial intelligence. So you’d think Apple would be pushing some futuristic new gadget, right?
Nope. Instead, they’re betting that the iPhone will be central to however we interact with AI in the future. Joswiak basically said that nothing about the AI revolution is incompatible with the iPhone, and that it’s not going anywhere. The implication is clear: whatever wild AI innovations come down the pipeline, Apple thinks you’re going to be using them on an iPhone.
It’s a bold move, especially when you consider that Sam Altman from OpenAI has straight-up said that in the future, AI might be running companies instead of humans. When CEO Tim Cook was asked if Apple would ever have an AI model as its leader, he laughed it off and made it clear that Apple’s leadership page will always have actual humans on it.
Whether Apple’s faith in the iPhone is justified remains to be seen. The company is being pretty cagey about what’s actually coming in the next few years, so don’t be shocked if Apple does drop some AI-powered device eventually. But for now, they’re doubling down on the idea that the device in your pocket is going to remain relevant for decades to come. Love them or hate them, that’s the kind of confidence only Apple seems to have.
