Japantown's Dreary Burger King is Getting a Major Upgrade This Summer

If you’ve ever walked into the Burger King at Fillmore and Post and felt like something was seriously off, you’re not alone. That particular location has been giving major sad fast-food vibes for way too long, but good news: it’s about to get a major glow-up.
The chain is officially closing down, and in its place, we’re getting Super Duper Burger, a homegrown SF favorite that actually gives a damn about what goes into your meal. This is legitimately exciting if you live in or frequent Japantown, because Super Duper represents everything that’s different from your typical chain burger experience.
Super Duper Burger opened its first location back in 2010 in the Castro, co-founded by Eddie Sarti with a mission that feels refreshingly intentional. Instead of the typical mass-produced patty situation, they’re using organic, locally-sourced, humanely raised beef from Brandt Beef, and it’s never frozen. They also partner with Straus Family Creamery for their soft-serve ice cream, which is another sign they’re actually paying attention to quality. The branding might look a bit similar to Shake Shack, but this is a homegrown operation that’s been doing the “fast food with slow food values” thing for over a decade.
The Fillmore Street location is expected to open this summer at 1701 Fillmore Street, right at the corner of Post. You’ll basically be catty-corner from the AMC Kabuki and across the street from Copra, so the location is solid if you’re already in the neighborhood for a movie or shopping. This will be Super Duper’s ninth location across San Francisco and their 21st overall, which shows they’re on a serious expansion kick right now.
Back of the House Inc., the restaurant group behind the expansion, has been crushing it lately. They just opened their 20th location in Corte Madera earlier this month, and they’ve got more locations coming to San Ramon and Union Square later this year. It’s clear that Super Duper has figured out a formula that actually works, quality ingredients, decent prices, and a vibe that doesn’t make you feel like you’re settling.
For those of us in the Bay Area, this kind of shift matters. We’re watching local businesses expand while maintaining their values, and that’s the kind of development that actually makes neighborhoods better instead of just replacing one corporate chain with another. The fact that Super Duper is scaling up while staying committed to their sourcing and quality standards is honestly refreshing. So if you’ve been avoiding that depressing Burger King on Fillmore, mark your calendar for summer. Your burger game is about to level up significantly.
