Sam Smith Just Called This Bay Area Burger Joint a Perfect 10 Before Leaving Town

Sam Smith’s love affair with Bay Area food has been nothing short of adorable. If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram lately, you might’ve caught their “piggy” food account, @samserved, documenting an impressive culinary tour around the region. From wings at San Tung to sashimi at the Castro gem Eiji, the singer has been eating their way through our neighborhoods like a true local, and honestly, we’re here for it.

But now that Smith’s five-week residency at the Castro Theatre has wrapped up, they’re heading out of town. And before they go, they wanted to leave us with one final food moment.

This week, Smith took to the roof of the iconic Castro Theatre marquee to film a goodbye video featuring what might be their most ambitious food haul yet. After asking fans to recommend the best smashburger in the Bay, Lovely’s, the beloved burger spot with locations in Cole Valley and Oakland, came through with the goods. Smith documented their experience with a spread that included several hot dogs, chili cheese fries, and seemingly every burger on the menu.

The verdict? Mixed, but mostly enthusiastic. Smith found the Chili Willie both “rude” (as in, the name is bold) and “too spicy” for their taste. But the Drive-Thru burger with American cheese on a sesame bun? That’s where things got real. Smith called it “a 10 out of 10 burger”, and honestly, when someone’s been eating this thoughtfully around the Bay for the past month, their endorsement actually means something.

What makes this moment genuinely charming is Smith’s sharing spirit. Most of the feast was destined for their team, they weren’t going to keep all that food to themselves. But the chili cheese fries? Those were off limits. “That’s not going to my team. That’s mine”, Smith declared, and we can’t blame them for gatekeeping those.

Smith’s food journey through the Bay Area has taken them everywhere from Pier 23 Cafe to Shoreline Coffee Shop in Mill Valley, hitting up iconic spots like Molinari Delicatessen along the way. It’s been a masterclass in exploring the region’s food scene with genuine enthusiasm and appreciation.

So whether you’re a longtime Lovely’s devotee or someone who’s been sleeping on smashburgers, maybe it’s time to finally check out what all the fuss is about. And if you happen to spot Smith’s posts in the future, you’ll know exactly where their Bay Area food awakening started.
