Free Tulips Are Coming to Union Square This Saturday. Here's What You Need to Know

If you’ve been scrolling through your feed and seeing pics of gorgeous tulip displays, Union Square’s about to make your weekend. This Saturday, the annual Tulip Day is back, and yes, you can snag 80,000 free tulips, that’s eight per person, without spending a dime. Seriously, it’s one of those rare SF events that actually delivers on the hype.
Tulip Day kicks off Union Square in Bloom, a whole festival vibe featuring floral displays, food vendors, and themed cocktails from local businesses. It’s basically the city’s way of celebrating International Women’s Day and bringing some much-needed spring energy downtown. The tulips themselves are grown right here in the US using bulbs from the Netherlands, continuing a tradition that dates back to the first Tulip Festival in Holland, Michigan way back in 1929.
Mayor Lurie is hyped about it too, calling it a way to drive foot traffic, support local businesses, and keep the downtown recovery going. Which, honestly, we get, but let’s be real about what that means for you: massive crowds and traffic that’ll make you question your life choices.
Here’s the tea: lines start forming at 9 am, but the gates don’t open until 1 pm. Yeah, you read that right. People are willing to camp out for hours to grab some free flowers. If you’re thinking about going, show up early, and we mean early. Previous attendees who missed out in past years have said it’s absolutely worth the effort once you actually get through.
One San Francisco couple told media outlets they showed up at sunrise after missing the event the year before due to massive lines. They said it was worth it just for the people-watching while the sun came up, plus the stunning flowers at the end. Another visitor from Woodland admitted she gave up the previous year and just hit up the store instead, but came back prepared the following year and called it an amazing community event.
So yeah, if you’re down for a chaotic but ultimately rewarding San Francisco experience, head to Union Square this Saturday. Bring your friends, grab your eight tulips, support the local businesses popping up around the square, and snap some pics for the 'gram. Just maybe don’t expect to get in and out quickly, this is a whole thing. But hey, free flowers during a time when everything in this city costs money? We’ll take it.
