Halloween isn’t just about candy and costumes, it’s a celebration of cinematic history, especially when it comes to classic horror films.

This year, San Jose’s 3Below Theaters is offering film enthusiasts a rare opportunity to experience two groundbreaking horror movies that have defined the genre: “The Phantom of the Opera” and “The Bride of Frankenstein”.

Fans can catch the 100-year-old “Phantom,” featuring the legendary Lon Chaney, at two special screenings, one on Halloween night at 7 p.m. and another on Saturday, November 1st at 2 p.m. The film, a silent masterpiece, showcases Chaney’s incredible ability to transform himself through makeup and performance.

For those craving more vintage horror, “The Bride of Frankenstein” will screen at 8:45 p.m. on Halloween and 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. Starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester, this 90-year-old film is considered a landmark in horror cinema, offering a perfect blend of gothic horror and dark humor.

As a bonus, Tim Burton’s beloved “The Nightmare Before Christmas” will be screened between these classic films, providing a contemporary animation counterpoint to the vintage horror.

Tickets are priced between $12-$15, with validated parking available in the city parking garage located at 288 S. Second St. in San Jose. Film lovers can find more details and purchase tickets at 3Below Theaters’ website.

This Halloween weekend offers a unique chance to experience the roots of horror cinema, showcasing how these early films continue to captivate and terrify audiences decades after their initial release.
