In a recent Gallup poll that reveals the complex landscape of public opinion, tech mogul Elon Musk has emerged as the most unpopular public figure in the United States, with a staggering 61% of respondents viewing him unfavorably.
The poll, which surveyed Americans’ perceptions of 14 prominent global and national figures, paints a stark picture of Musk’s reputation. With only 33% of respondents giving him a positive rating, his net favorability rating plummets to a dismal -28%, even lower than controversial political figures like former President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Political figures didn’t fare much better in the survey. Donald Trump continues to polarize public opinion, with 57% of Americans holding an unfavorable view just seven months into his second presidency. California Governor Gavin Newsom, potentially eyeing a future presidential run, stands at 30% favorable and 41% unfavorable, with 28% of respondents either unaware of him or having no opinion.
Interestingly, some progressive politicians showed more resilience. Senator Bernie Sanders emerged as the most well-liked American politician in the poll, with a net +11% favorability and 49% of respondents viewing him positively. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez maintained a modest net -4% rating, with nearly a third of the country having no formed opinion about her.
The poll also highlighted shifting public sentiments. Since January, Americans’ opinions of Musk and politicians like Marco Rubio have significantly declined. Trump’s favorability has shifted by approximately 7%, moving from a near 50-50 split to a more decidedly negative perception.
In a surprising bright spot, Pope Leo XIV topped the poll with a 57% favorable rating and only 11% unfavorable, demonstrating the potential for positive public perception amid widespread political and technological cynicism.
These findings underscore the volatile nature of public opinion and the complex dynamics of reputation in the current media landscape, where high-profile figures can quickly fall from grace.
