Immigrants make America Great

In a groundbreaking legislative effort, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla from California is pushing for a transformative immigration reform that could provide a pathway to permanent residency for millions of undocumented immigrants.

Padilla’s proposed legislation, the Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929, aims to modernize decades-old immigration policies by updating the registry requirements. Currently, individuals who entered the United States before January 1, 1972, can pursue residency through this process. The new bill would extend this cut-off date, offering hope to long-term immigrants who have been living and contributing to communities across the country.

The proposed legislation would allow individuals who have continuously resided in the United States for at least seven years to qualify for permanent residency, provided they meet existing eligibility requirements. Padilla emphasizes that this is a “common sense fix” to the current immigration system, requiring no new bureaucratic infrastructure, just a simple update to existing law.

Companion legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Zoe Lofgren from San Jose, who argues that the approach balances border control with a pragmatic solution for long-term residents. “Providing stability to our communities and workforces , versus terrorizing them , will make our country stronger,” Lofgren stated.

Historically, the last time the registry cut-off date was updated was in 1986 under President Ronald Reagan. Padilla acknowledges the potential political challenges, particularly with a Republican-controlled Congress and White House. However, he remains committed to advocating for immigrants who have established roots and contributed to American society.

This legislation represents a critical step towards comprehensive immigration reform, offering a compassionate and practical approach to addressing the status of long-term undocumented immigrants who have become integral parts of their local communities.
