In a dramatic turn of events, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie successfully negotiated with President Trump to halt a potential federal deployment in the city. Late Wednesday night, Trump called Lurie and explicitly stated he was canceling any plans for federal agents or National Guard troops to enter San Francisco.

Lurie shared details of the conversation, emphasizing the city’s resilience and potential for recovery. “San Francisco is on the rise,” he stated, highlighting the return of visitors, increasing building leases, and workers coming back to offices. The mayor also expressed openness to continued partnerships with federal law enforcement agencies like the FBI and DEA to address drug-related issues.

The potential federal intervention had been brewing for weeks, with Trump repeatedly describing San Francisco as a “disaster” and suggesting federal action could help combat crime. However, the specific details of the planned deployment remained unclear.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem reaffirmed the decision to call off the federal deployment during a morning conversation with Lurie. Interestingly, tech leader Marc Benioff reportedly played a role in persuading Trump, telling him about San Francisco’s promising future.

Despite the apparent resolution, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, indicated continued monitoring of the city’s situation. Meanwhile, ongoing protests near Coast Guard Island in Alameda suggested underlying tensions about potential immigration enforcement operations.

Lurie expressed gratitude to San Franciscans for their united response, stating that the city’s values were “on full display” during this challenging period. The mayor remains committed to public safety and maintaining San Francisco’s reputation as a global technology hub.

While the immediate threat of federal intervention has passed, the city remains vigilant and prepared for potential future scenarios.
