Imagine a world where robots aren’t just cold, calculating machines, but compassionate companions that help children navigate the scary landscape of hospital stays. Enter Robin, a 4-foot-tall AI-powered robot designed to provide emotional support and companionship to pediatric patients.

Developed by Expper Technologies, Robin is more than just a technological marvel - it’s a lifeline for kids facing challenging medical experiences. The robot, programmed to interact like a 7-year-old girl, can play games, remember patient names, and even mirror emotional responses. When Luca, a 6-year-old leukemia patient, first encountered Robin, his face lit up with joy at being remembered.

Robin operates with a unique blend of autonomy and remote human control, ensuring safe and meaningful interactions. The robot can play music, engage in simple games like tic-tac-toe, and even help explain medical procedures in a child-friendly manner. At HealthBridge Children’s Hospital in Orange County, staff have witnessed how Robin transforms the clinical environment into a more comforting space.

The robot’s creator, Karen Khachikyan, developed Robin with a deeply personal mission. Growing up in a single-parent household in Armenia, he understood loneliness and wanted to create a technological friend that could provide genuine emotional connection. The robot’s personality has been continuously refined based on children’s reactions - even down to its favorite animal being a chicken, which consistently makes kids laugh.

As the healthcare industry faces significant workforce shortages, robots like Robin represent an innovative solution to providing additional emotional support. The long-term vision isn’t about replacing healthcare workers, but complementing their efforts and filling critical gaps in patient care.

With plans to expand Robin’s capabilities - including measuring patient vitals and potentially assisting elderly patients - this robot represents a fascinating intersection of technology, empathy, and healthcare innovation. It’s a glimpse into a future where artificial intelligence doesn’t just process data, but genuinely connects with human emotions.
