The future of transportation is here, and it’s playing out on the streets of San Francisco right now. In a head-to-head race between Tesla and Waymo’s autonomous vehicles, the competition is as fierce as the tech giants behind them.

Our reporters put these robotaxis to the ultimate test, summoning them simultaneously from the same location to see which would win the race to Jackson Square. The results were surprising: while Tesla’s ride cost a budget-friendly $5.80, Waymo clocked in at a hefty $20.36.

Tesla’s robotaxi arrived with a safety driver, operating in a massive zone covering Marin, the East Bay, and stretching down to San Jose. The vehicle boasted impressive entertainment options, allowing passengers to sync Spotify, Apple Music, and Netflix - though our reporter struggled to get the music working.

Waymo, operating without a safety driver, proved to be the speedier option. It arrived two minutes earlier than estimated and navigated the city streets with remarkable efficiency. The autonomous vehicle even offered Spotify integration, a recent upgrade that seemed to address previous passenger complaints.

The most striking differences emerged in coverage and pricing. Tesla operates from 6 a.m. to midnight, while Waymo provides 24-hour service. Tesla’s current pricing seems deliberately competitive, though industry experts suggest this introductory rate won’t last forever.

Interestingly, Tesla enforces strict rules: no drinking, and everyone must wear a seatbelt. The safety driver was clear that any shenanigans would immediately end the ride.

In the final race, Waymo emerged victorious, arriving four minutes ahead of Tesla after the latter navigated around a construction zone. The autonomous vehicle, true to its robotic nature, simply drove away after dropping off the passenger - no celebration, no small talk.

As San Francisco continues to be the testing ground for autonomous vehicle technology, these robotaxis represent more than just a ride - they’re a glimpse into a transportation future where human drivers might become obsolete. The race is on, and for now, the robots are winning.
