After nearly two decades of subdued Halloween celebrations, the Castro neighborhood is gearing up for an epic comeback this October. The Castro Merchants group is planning to transform their monthly night market into a full-blown Halloween extravaganza on October 31st, marking the first official outdoor Halloween celebration since a tragic shooting in 2006 halted the iconic street party.

The proposed event promises to be more than just a typical market. Expect live entertainment stages, food trucks, vendor booths, and potentially an expanded footprint along 18th Street. Nate Bourg, President of Castro Merchants, has assured community members they’re working closely with partners to create a “spectacularly spooky” and safe experience.

This revival comes on the heels of successful night markets in other San Francisco neighborhoods like the Sunset and Chinatown. Unlike previous years’ small-scale events organized by the Civic Joy Fund, which included movie screenings and costume contests, this iteration aims to recapture the neighborhood’s legendary Halloween spirit.

Safety remains a top priority. The city has been cautious about large street celebrations following past incidents of violence. However, recent night markets have demonstrated the potential for well-managed, community-driven events that don’t attract disruptive elements.

While permitting is still being finalized, the excitement is palpable. The Castro Night Market’s potential Halloween transformation represents more than just a festive evening – it symbolizes community resilience, healing, and the neighborhood’s ongoing commitment to creating inclusive, vibrant public spaces.

Local LGBTQ+ and San Francisco residents should mark their calendars and stay tuned for official announcements. This could be the resurrection of one of the city’s most beloved Halloween traditions.
