In the heart of San Francisco, a cultural renaissance is taking shape around a game that bridges generations and connects people beyond digital screens. Mahjong, the classic Chinese tile game, is experiencing a vibrant resurgence among young adults seeking authentic social experiences.

Ryan Lee, a 25-year-old Chinese American, has been at the forefront of this movement. What started as casual game nights in his apartment quickly transformed into Youth Luck Leisure (YLL) Mahjong Club, hosting bimonthly events that attract up to 200 guests across 30 tables. These gatherings are more than just game nights - they’re cultural celebrations featuring live DJs, custom cocktails, and a welcoming environment for newcomers.

The trend isn’t just local. Eventbrite reports a stunning 179% increase in mahjong events across the United States from 2023 to 2024, signaling a broader generational shift towards offline, interactive experiences. For many young Asian Americans, the game represents a meaningful connection to heritage and community.

Nicole Wong, an Oakland-based writer and audio producer, sees mahjong as more than a game. Through her Mahjong Project and published book “Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora,” she explores the game’s rich cultural significance and its power to build connections.

Participants like Ethan Vuong view mahjong as a nuanced social experience. “It’s not just a skill-based game,” Vuong explains, “it’s an expression of your personality”. For many, it’s an opportunity to learn about their cultural roots while making new friends in a relaxed, engaging setting.

The YLL Mahjong Club’s events consistently sell out, with long waiting lists demonstrating the growing appetite for this communal experience. With instructors always on hand to teach newcomers and a welcoming atmosphere, these events are breaking down barriers and creating unexpected connections.

As digital fatigue grows, mahjong offers a refreshing alternative - a tactile, social experience that brings people together in real life, one tile at a time.
