Mel Brooks Is Bringing 'Spaceballs' Back and We're Here for the Nostalgia Trip

Name that TV sci-fi comedy ...

Sci-fi comedy fans, buckle up for an epic blast from the past! Comedy legend Mel Brooks is reviving his cult classic “Spaceballs” nearly four decades after the original film, and it’s shaping up to be a hilarious meta-commentary on Hollywood’s endless franchise expansions.

At 98 years old, Brooks is proving he’s still got the comedic chops that made him a cultural icon. The legendary filmmaker announced the sequel with a tongue-in-cheek video that brilliantly parodies the opening crawl of Star Wars, poking fun at the entertainment industry’s obsession with prequels, sequels, and spinoffs.

“After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’” Brooks quipped. “But instead, we’re making this movie! May the Schwartz be with you!”

The upcoming film is set to bring back original stars Bill Pullman as Lone Starr and Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, promising a nostalgic ride for fans of the 1987 classic. Actor Josh Gad, who is collaborating with Brooks on the script, described the project as a dream come true, having been inspired by “Spaceballs” before even watching Star Wars.

The sequel, playfully described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,” is scheduled for release in 2027. It promises to continue the original film’s tradition of smart, satirical comedy that takes aim at sci-fi tropes and Hollywood’s franchise machine.

For those who might need a refresher, the original “Spaceballs” followed Lone Starr and his half-man, half-dog sidekick Barf as they rescue Princess Vespa from the villainous President Skroob, played by Brooks himself.

With Brooks at the helm and a mix of original and new talent involved, this sequel looks like it’ll be more than just another nostalgic cash grab – it’s a comedic event that promises to skewer contemporary pop culture with the same wit and irreverence that made the original a cult classic.
