San Francisco's Night Market Scene Is Heating Up This Summer

I flew into SFO early on a Thursday morning for Figma's first conference — Config 2020. My Lyft driver was from Brazil and he lived in Huntington Beach but commuted up to the Bay Area to drive for 4 or 5 days at a time.

Get ready to explore San Francisco’s vibrant neighborhood nightlife as night markets continue to take the city by storm. This summer, local communities are transforming city streets into bustling cultural hubs, offering everything from local artisan goods to entertainment and drinks.

This weekend, Cole Valley and Castro are hosting their respective night markets, showcasing the city’s growing enthusiasm for these community-driven events. Cole Valley Nights, running from 4-9pm on Cole Street, is featuring a “Cinema Under the Stars” theme with animated short films from Emmy Award-winning Tonko House, a Berkeley-based studio. Attendees can expect 60 local makers, artists, and food artisans, along with to-go alcoholic beverages from neighborhood favorites like Finnegan’s Wake and Cole Valley Tavern.

Meanwhile, the Castro Night Market returns on Friday from 5-10pm along 18th Street, offering two stages of entertainment behind Walgreens and on the south side of the street. These markets have been gaining significant popularity, with Chinatown’s Night Market recently named the best in the country by USA Today.

The expansion of these events is partially due to new “entertainment zone” privileges allowing bars to sell to-go cocktails during designated events. The recent Valencia Live! night market demonstrated the massive potential, drawing packed crowds and generating excitement across different neighborhoods.

While some might wonder if San Francisco could become oversaturated with night markets, current trends suggest otherwise. The Castro Night Market is already scheduled through October 2025, indicating sustained community interest and enthusiasm.

These night markets represent more than just shopping and entertainment, they’re a celebration of local culture, creativity, and community connection. As more neighborhoods join the trend, San Francisco continues to prove itself as a dynamic, innovative urban landscape that knows how to bring people together.
