Sprouts Farmers Market is Bringing Fresh, Organic Vibes to SoMa

San Francisco’s grocery scene is about to get a wellness boost with Sprouts Farmers Market planning its first city location in the SoMa neighborhood.

The Phoenix-based grocery chain, known for its extensive organic produce and diet-specific product arrangements, will be setting up shop at a two-level shopping center on Ninth Street. Currently home to Trader Joe’s and the Container Store, the location will soon welcome Sprouts into a former Nordstrom Rack space.

Sprouts has carved out a unique niche in the grocery market by catering to health-conscious consumers. Their stores feature an open layout with an impressive organic produce section at the center, making it easy for vegetarians, gluten-intolerant shoppers, and wellness enthusiasts to find exactly what they need.

While the company traces its roots back to family-owned farmstands in San Diego during the 1940s, it has since grown to nearly 500 locations nationwide, with over two dozen in the Bay Area. The San Francisco location represents an expansion of their urban market presence.

This new grocery store arrives during a challenging time for San Francisco’s supermarket landscape. Recent closures like Lucky in the Bayview and potential temporary shutdowns of some Safeway locations have created uncertainty in the city’s food retail environment.

Trader Joe’s, which will be located mere feet away from the new Sprouts, seems unphased by the incoming competition. The proximity echoes a similar scenario in San Jose, where a Sprouts and Trader Joe’s already coexist.

While an exact opening date hasn’t been confirmed, sources suggest the San Francisco Sprouts will welcome customers sometime in 2028, promising a fresh addition to the city’s grocery options.
