Get ready to relive your childhood nostalgia with a tech-savvy twist. McDonald’s is bringing back its iconic Monopoly game, but this time, it’s going fully digital. Starting October 6th, the beloved promotion will return to restaurants across the United States, transforming how fans play and win.
The new version ditches the old-school physical board game for a sleek, app-based experience. Registered loyalty program members can now track and play the game exclusively through the McDonald’s mobile app. While some physical game pieces will still appear on items like large fry boxes, the primary interaction happens digitally.
Like the classic version, players can collect property pieces by ordering select menu items and scanning them into the app. The prize pool remains exciting, featuring rewards like free food, bonus loyalty points, 1 million American Airlines miles, a new Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a whopping $1 million cash prize.
This digital revival comes at a strategic time for McDonald’s, which recently experienced a sales rebound. After two consecutive quarters of declining sales, the company credits promotions like the “A Minecraft Movie” and new crispy chicken strips for turning things around. The Monopoly game represents another innovative approach to engaging customers and boosting loyalty program participation.
Interestingly, the game has a controversial history. In 2001, an FBI investigation exposed a massive fraud scheme where several million-dollar prizes were rigged by an insider named Jerome Jacobson. The scandal, which involved embezzling high-value game pieces and selling them for cash, was even documented in an HBO film.
McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski sees the loyalty program as a crucial growth area. Currently, about a quarter of the company’s U.S. business comes through the program, with customers more than doubling their visits after joining. The company aims to reach 250 million active loyalty users globally by 2027.
So, whether you’re a nostalgic millennial or a game-loving Gen Z, the new McDonald’s Monopoly experience promises to blend classic fun with modern technology.
