Richmond’s own Alysa Liu is getting the hometown hero treatment, and Oakland is ready to celebrate. After Liu absolutely crushed it at the Winter Olympics in February, winning gold in women’s figure skating, the City of Oakland is throwing a massive rally in her honor. Mark your calendars: Thursday, March 12 at noon, Frank Ogawa Plaza at City Hall.

Liu has deep roots in the East Bay community, she trained at the Oakland Ice Center and perfected her skills on the region’s ice. So it makes total sense that Oakland wants to honor her incredible achievement on the world stage. Plus, the city already got a head start on the hype when a giant Alysa Liu mural popped up in the Temescal neighborhood earlier this month.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning to show up: Doors open at 9 a.m., but organizers are encouraging people to arrive early to snag a good spot. This thing is expected to draw a ton of people, so space is limited and admission is subject to venue capacity and safety guidelines. The good news? It’s completely free. You just need to submit a free RSVP in advance at visitoakland.com/alysa-liu/.

While the official invite doesn’t spell out exactly what activities are planned, you can pretty much guarantee there will be speeches. Liu herself will be in person, that’s the main event right there. You’ll probably also hear from Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee and other local politicians who are definitely eager to be photographed alongside an Olympic gold medalist.

If you’re trying to get there, public transportation is highly encouraged. That means you can hop on BART or an AC Transit bus without stressing about finding parking or dealing with traffic around City Hall.

This celebration is a big deal for the Bay Area. Liu’s success represents what’s possible when young athletes have access to quality training facilities and community support. The Oakland Ice Center helped develop one of the country’s best figure skaters, and this rally is a chance for the whole community to come together and recognize that.

Whether you’ve been following Liu’s skating career since the beginning or you’re just getting hyped because she’s a local legend, this is your chance to be part of something special. Bring your friends, get there early, and prepare to celebrate one of the Bay Area’s brightest stars.
