Healthcare workers at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital are taking a bold stand against proposed workforce changes that could significantly impact their job security and compensation. On Wednesday, approximately 1,300 members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers began an open-ended strike to protest a systemwide reorganization plan.

The core of the dispute centers around UCSF’s plan to integrate workers from Children’s Hospital Oakland into the UCSF Health workforce. Union leaders argue that this move would effectively cancel existing union contracts and potentially reduce take-home pay by around $10,000 for approximately 2,500 East Bay workers.

Pharmacy technician Marques Williams highlighted the workers’ primary concern: “We’re determined to stop UCSF from canceling our contracts, because it would make it harder for us to provide for our families and advocate for the East Bay kids we serve”.

Hospital officials defend the reorganization, suggesting that while some workers might experience a temporary reduction in pay, they will gain access to more comprehensive long-term benefits and a more valuable pension plan.

The strike has already caused disruptions, with hospital locations in Walnut Creek and Brentwood currently closed. However, critical care services like emergency departments and operating rooms remain operational. Patients with scheduled appointments are being notified of potential changes and can contact Patient Relations for more information.

The striking workforce includes a diverse group of healthcare professionals, such as nursing assistants, respiratory therapists, housekeepers, clerical workers, and medical technicians. They have filed a lawsuit seeking to compel arbitration, with a federal judge scheduled to hear the complaint on June 26.

As the dispute continues, both sides remain committed to their positions, leaving the duration and ultimate resolution of the strike uncertain. The ongoing conflict underscores the complex negotiations between healthcare institutions and their essential workers, highlighting the ongoing struggle for fair compensation and working conditions.

For patients and community members, it’s crucial to stay informed and support the workers who provide critical healthcare services in the Bay Area.
