Meet Katherine Aleman: The Teacher Taking on Ken Calvert's Congressional Seat

San Gabriel Mountains over Inland Empire, CA 2016 (In EXPLORE)

The battle for California’s 41st Congressional District is heating up, and Katherine Aleman is ready to challenge the status quo. A middle school English language teacher and part-time chicken farmer from Corona, Aleman is positioning herself as a grassroots candidate with deep roots in the Inland Empire.

With the backing of former Senator Barbara Boxer, Aleman is bringing a fresh perspective to a crowded Democratic primary. Her campaign focuses on critical issues like affordability, education, and veterans’ support - drawing from her personal experiences as a daughter of a Marine helicopter pilot and a working parent.

What sets Aleman apart is her authentic connection to the district. Her fluency in Spanish and experience living in the western side of the district, where over 70% of the population resides, gives her a unique advantage. During her previous run for Norco City Council, she demonstrated her ability to win in a district with a significant Republican voter registration advantage.

Aleman isn’t just a candidate; she’s a community builder. Her small farm stand, “Fluffy Butt Ranch,” and her school’s chicken club showcase her commitment to local food security and innovative education. These endeavors reflect her belief in practical solutions and community empowerment.

The race against incumbent Rep. Ken Calvert, a long-serving Republican known for his controversial votes, is expected to be one of the most closely watched congressional battles. Calvert’s substantial fundraising war chest of $2.5 million indicates the high stakes of this election.

With support from Democratic strategists who believe in her potential and a campaign focused on lived experiences, Aleman represents a new generation of political leadership. Her message is clear: representation matters, and it’s time for someone who truly understands the challenges facing working families in the Inland Empire.
