Young Californians Speak Out: How Economic Survival is Reshaping Political Priorities

As California’s younger generations continue to grapple with unprecedented economic challenges, a recent poll by Power California and Latino Decisions reveals a stark shift in political priorities that could transform the state’s electoral landscape.

The survey of Californians aged 18 to 30 highlights a profound transformation in how young voters view political engagement. Economic survival has eclipsed traditional social justice concerns, with a staggering 80% of respondents reporting that their living costs are outpacing their wages. Nearly a third of young Californians are contemplating drastic measures like taking second jobs or leaving the state entirely.

“What is motivating young voters isn’t partisan fearmongering. It’s the rent, it’s the wages, it’s the daily fight to survive,” says Saa’un Bell, executive vice president of Power California. This sentiment resonates across racial and ethnic groups, with young Black and Latino populations experiencing disproportionate economic uncertainty.

The poll unveils complex political dynamics, showing a nuanced picture of voter sentiment. While most young Californians supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, there’s a subtle but significant shift away from traditional party loyalties. Young men, in particular, are showing increased political complexity, with some moving towards Republican registration.

Despite economic pressures, young Californians remain politically engaged. Over one-third have donated money or volunteered in their communities, and approximately 80% actively discuss political issues with friends and family. This engagement reflects a generation determined to create change from the ground up.

Daisy Maxion, an organizing director, captures this spirit perfectly: “No one’s gonna save us but ourselves… We have to do things ourselves”. Her words encapsulate a generation’s resilience and commitment to transforming systemic challenges.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, these economic concerns will likely play a crucial role in shaping political outcomes. With young Californians projected to become the state’s largest voting bloc by 2028, their priorities are set to redefine the state’s political landscape.
