In a bold move that challenges the narrative of tech entrepreneurs fleeing California, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan is doubling down on his commitment to the state by launching Garry’s List, a new nonprofit focused on voter education and policy advocacy.

Tan, known for his active involvement in local civic issues, is creating an organization designed to support what he calls “commonsense, pro-growth policies and candidates”. Drawing inspiration from Emily’s List, the nonprofit will publish voter guides, policy research, and host events across California aimed at fostering political engagement.

With a track record of local political involvement, including contributing to the successful recall of District Attorney Chesa Boudin and school board members, Tan sees Garry’s List as an opportunity to expand his impact beyond San Francisco. The organization plans to build “political infrastructure for the next 20 years,” focusing on moderate candidates and policy initiatives.

Despite potential challenges like the proposed billionaire tax, Tan remains steadfast in his commitment to California. “I’m ride or die,” he stated, emphasizing his belief that entrepreneurs and investors are crucial to the state’s innovation ecosystem.

Leveraging technology, Tan used Anthropic’s AI tool Claude Code to develop the organization’s website and has already published blog posts on local issues like the San Francisco Unified School District’s enrollment lottery and ongoing teachers’ strike.

While Tan is funding the organization himself and has raised additional funds from supporters, he’s clear about his mission: to educate voters, support pragmatic policies, and maintain California’s position as a global innovation hub.

As tech talent considers relocation, Tan’s Garry’s List represents a proactive approach to addressing systemic challenges and reinvigorating political engagement in the Golden State.
