Jazz lovers and music enthusiasts, get ready for a bittersweet change in the Bay Area music landscape. Blue Note Napa, the beloved nine-year-old jazz venue nestled in Napa Valley, is preparing to close its doors after a final performance on New Year’s Eve. But don’t despair just yet – the club’s leadership is dropping tantalizing hints about a potential new home in San Francisco.

The venue, an offshoot of the legendary Blue Note Jazz House in New York’s Greenwich Village, has been a cultural hotspot since opening in the former Napa Valley Opera House in 2016. Known for hosting incredible performances and the annual Labor Day Weekend Blue Note Jazz Festival (formerly emceed by comedian Dave Chappelle), the club has been a significant player in the Bay Area’s music scene.

Managing Director Ken Tesler framed the closure not as an ending, but as an “evolution”. The club’s statement suggests they’re actively exploring options for a San Francisco venue that captures the city’s unique musical spirit. Blue Note Entertainment Group president Steven Bensusan emphasized their commitment to creating a space that reflects “the energy and spirit of San Francisco” while maintaining the intimate authenticity Blue Note is known for.

While details remain vague, there’s speculation about potential locations. The group previously expressed interest in the former Yoshi’s space in the Fillmore, which has sat empty for some time. This potential move could breathe new life into a historic music venue and continue Blue Note’s tradition of bringing world-class jazz to the Bay Area.

The annual Black Radio Experience festival, which evolved from the original Blue Note Jazz Festival, will continue to be held at Napa’s Meritage Hotel. So fans can still look forward to that musical tradition.

As the Bay Area’s music scene continues to evolve, this potential relocation signals an exciting moment for local jazz enthusiasts. Stay tuned for more updates on where Blue Note might land next in San Francisco.
