The 112th Bay to Breakers transformed San Francisco’s streets into a vibrant carnival of creativity and chaos last Sunday. With sunshine blazing and costumes ranging from pop culture references to satirical political statements, runners and spectators turned the annual race into much more than just a sporting event.

This year’s most notable trend was an abundance of pope-themed costumes, likely inspired by the recent appointment of a Chicago-born pontiff. Participants creatively interpreted the theme, with costumes featuring deep-dish pizza popes, Blues Brothers popes, and even a provocative “JD Vance Did It” pope.

Approximately 16,700 registered runners crossed the finish line, slightly below the organizers’ expectations of 20,000. The race winners included Oscar Medina in the men’s category, Julia Vasquez-Giguere in the women’s category, and Cal Calamia in the non-binary category, who secured their fourth consecutive victory.

A standout moment was the “Full House of Prime Rib” pop-up restaurant, where two participants dressed as the Olsen Twins served gourmet prime rib sandwiches. Local chef Dalton Thomas orchestrated this culinary spectacle, offering tableside salads and elaborate sandwiches to hungry racers.

The event wasn’t without its challenges. Organizers faced a medal distribution issue, with unregistered runners reportedly obtaining finishing medals. Race spokesperson David Perry acknowledged the problem, emphasizing the need to discourage unauthorized participation.

Beyond the official race, the event was characterized by its trademark revelry. Hayes Hill was particularly lively, with numerous beer bongs, creative drinking apparatuses, and spirited performances. Porta-potties and security guards worked overtime to manage the festivities.

Despite the potential logistical hiccups, Bay to Breakers 2025 embodied San Francisco’s unique spirit of creativity, inclusivity, and unbridled fun. The race once again proved that it’s far more than a simple athletic competition – it’s a celebration of community, costume, and collective joy.
