In the heart of South Santa Clara County, a quiet revolution is taking shape. Gilroy, a city historically known for its conservative landscape, is set to host its first-ever Pride celebration on August 2, marking a powerful moment of visibility and resilience for the local LGBTQ+ community.

After nearly two years of grassroots organizing by Pride Social South County, the event represents more than just a festival, it’s a testament to community courage. Co-founder Terry Hernandez understands the journey intimately, recalling early meetings where attendees feared potential confrontations from hate groups.

The celebration will beautifully intertwine queer identity with Gilroy’s rich Latino heritage. Attendees can expect a vibrant lineup featuring a queer folklorico troupe, local musicians, food trucks, and critical resource booths offering mental health support, HIV testing, and immigration legal assistance.

For many local LGBTQ+ individuals, this event symbolizes a transformative moment. Carlos Pineda, a local youth advocate, reflects on growing up feeling he needed to leave Gilroy to understand his identity, a sentiment shared by many in conservative communities.

Pride Social South County’s organizers are clear about their mission: creating visibility, providing support, and challenging existing narratives. Augustine Alvarez, the group’s treasurer, emphasizes that this event sends a powerful message: “We’re here. We’re going to continue to be here. We’re going to continue to fight for you”.

The event has garnered support from Mayor Greg Bozzo and Councilmember Zach Hilton, signaling a significant shift in local attitudes. While the journey hasn’t been without challenges, including previous resistance to flying the Pride flag at City Hall, the community has persistently pushed for recognition and acceptance.

Gilroy’s inaugural Pride will run from Noon to 4 p.m. at the Gilroy Civic Center, offering family-friendly activities. An adults-only after-party and drag show will follow at Tempo Kitchen and Bar, promising a night of celebration and solidarity.

As Hernandez beautifully articulates, “It’s amazing when everybody comes together. At times, we don’t realize what we bring to the table. And Gilroy has pride, family, the love of community”.
