San Francisco’s vibrant music history is about to get another epic celebration this weekend. On Saturday, September 6th, Pier 39 is hosting a free Grateful Dead 60th anniversary party that promises to transport fans back to the golden era of psychedelic rock.

The all-day event kicks off at noon and runs until 7 pm, featuring an impressive lineup of local tribute bands that will keep the Dead’s legendary sound alive. The Minglewood Boys, a San Francisco-based Dead cover band, will take the stage at 1 pm, followed by the Sunshine Garcia Band at 5 pm. Led by Sunshine Garcia Becker, who has performed with original band members Bobby and Phil in Furthur, the band guarantees an authentic musical experience.

Beyond the music, the event offers some unique attractions for both hardcore Deadheads and curious newcomers. The Hard Rock Cafe will showcase a special memorabilia display featuring Bill Kreutzmann’s drum kit, a Jerry Garcia portrait painted by Grace Slick, rare photographs, and a handwritten set list.

For those looking to get creative, a free tie-dye station at the mid-pier will allow attendees to craft their own bandana – a perfect memento of the day. Local bars and restaurants along the Wharf will also offer drink specials, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Rex Foundation, a charitable organization founded by the Grateful Dead to support arts, indigenous peoples, and environmental causes.

This celebration isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s a testament to the Grateful Dead’s enduring cultural impact and their deep roots in San Francisco’s music scene. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just discovering their music, this free event promises a day of music, art, and community spirit.

So grab your tie-dye, channel your inner hippie, and head down to Pier 39 for a day of rock ‘n’ roll history.
