In the heart of San Francisco’s Lower Haight neighborhood, a passionate group of community members is breathing new life into a beloved teahouse that once served as a sanctuary for artists, tech workers, and wellness enthusiasts.

The Center, a decade-old gathering space known for its eclectic events and inclusive atmosphere, closed its doors in June after struggling with permitting issues and organizational challenges. But its spirit hasn’t been extinguished. A dedicated team of volunteers has formed the Gather Collective, a nonprofit aimed at recreating the magic of the original space.

Led by individuals like Derek Pankaew, a tech founder, and Alex Zirbel, a Gather steward, the group is on a mission to establish a new community hub that captures the essence of The Center. Their vision goes beyond just serving tea - they want to create a welcoming environment where people can connect, attend wellness workshops, and find a sense of belonging.

“We want to create this feeling of ‘Oh, this is our home,’” Pankaew explains. The team is committed to learning from past challenges, ensuring they secure proper permits and maintain sustainable operations.

Currently, Gather is hosting biweekly meditation gatherings and tea pop-ups while searching for the perfect permanent location. They’re looking for a space in or near Lower Haight that can accommodate their vision of a community-driven wellness center.

What sets this effort apart is its grassroots approach and genuine commitment to creating a meaningful third space in a city that desperately needs more community-oriented venues. With hundreds of people already signed up to support their journey, Gather represents more than just a teahouse - it’s a testament to San Francisco’s resilient and collaborative spirit.

As they continue their search for the ideal venue, the Gather team remains optimistic. “Some of the most unique spaces aren’t necessarily on the market,” Zirbel says. “We believe the right opportunity will find us”.
