San Francisco is about to get a whole lot more psychedelic as Muni rolls out specially designed buses celebrating the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary concert series. Starting this week, the 7-Haight/Noriega, 5-Fulton, and N-Judah lines are sporting mind-bending, tie-dye wrapped vehicles that capture the spirit of the city’s legendary music history.

Mayor Daniel Lurie unveiled the “PsychideliBus” and “TrippyTrain” designs, which pay homage to the iconic 1960s and '70s aesthetic that defined the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. These aren’t just your average transit vehicles - they’re rolling pieces of cultural art that showcase San Francisco’s enduring connection to the Grateful Dead.

For fans heading to the upcoming concerts at Golden Gate Park, Muni is offering an extra sweet deal: free rides for ticket holders during the August 1-3 weekend. The transit agency partnered with Another Planet Entertainment to make transportation as smooth as the band’s legendary jam sessions.

Design details include vibrant paisley patterns, classic tie-dye motifs, and a visual journey through the counterculture era that made the Grateful Dead a worldwide phenomenon. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) funded the project through their marketing budget, demonstrating a commitment to celebrating the city’s rich musical heritage.

For those wanting to take a piece of the nostalgia home, a limited edition tie-dye Muni t-shirt is now available at the Muni Store for $25, featuring the same psychedelic design as the buses. Sizes range from Small to 3X-Large, ensuring fans of all shapes can rock the commemorative gear.

While only three vehicles will sport the special wrap, the initiative represents more than just transportation - it’s a tribute to San Francisco’s ongoing cultural revolution and the enduring legacy of the Grateful Dead.
