In the heart of San Francisco’s Haight Street, Booksmith has made a bold statement by removing J.K. Rowling’s books from their shelves. The independent bookstore’s decision comes in direct response to Rowling’s recent efforts to fund organizations that aim to undermine transgender rights.
Booksmith co-owner Camden Avery explained their stance with unwavering clarity: “There’s a direct connection between book sales and the harm being done to our trans community”. The store’s Instagram post and in-store signage encourage customers to seek out used copies or alternative fantasy novels if they’re interested in Rowling’s work.
Initially, the bookstore received overwhelming support from local authors and community members. Charlie Jane Anders and Maggie Tokuda Hall were among those who publicly praised Booksmith’s principled decision. However, the move also attracted online criticism from those who mischaracterized the action as censorship.
Avery was quick to push back against such claims: “We’re exercising our First Amendment right to operate a business aligned with our values”. The bookstore views this as more than a simple business decision - it’s a stance against what they see as a broader political landscape threatening marginalized communities.
The response has been multifaceted. While some internet commentators have pushed back, the bookstore has also seen a surge of support. Their “Books Not Bans” fundraising initiative has already raised over $1,000, which will send queer-affirming books to organizations nationwide.
This isn’t the first time Booksmith has taken an ethical stand. Earlier this year, they also stopped selling books by Neil Gaiman following serious allegations against him.
For Avery, the message is clear: “The more people who know about the harmful actions of authors like Rowling, the better”. The bookstore remains committed to using its platform to support and amplify marginalized voices in an era of increasing political tension.
As threats to transgender rights continue to escalate, Booksmith’s action represents a small but significant act of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
