In a quirky twist of maritime exploration, an Oregon man has once again proven that creativity knows no bounds by breaking his own Guinness World Record for the longest journey in a pumpkin boat. Gary Kristensen, a passionate giant pumpkin enthusiast from Happy Valley, Oregon, has successfully paddled 58.57 miles down the Columbia River in a massive, hand-carved pumpkin vessel named the Marchflower.
Kristensen’s unusual nautical adventure began in 2011 when he first started growing giant pumpkins. By 2013, he was already competing in the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta, where he won several races and developed a unique passion for turning oversized gourds into watercraft.
In his latest expedition, Kristensen improved upon his previous record set in October 2024. His new pumpkin boat was 300 pounds lighter than his previous vessel, weighing in at around 900 pounds. The journey took him approximately 20 hours, which was six hours faster than his inaugural trip.
What makes Kristensen’s achievement remarkable is not just the physical challenge, but the intricate preparation required. Growing a giant pumpkin capable of withstanding a river journey during winter months presented significant obstacles. “The biggest challenge was successfully cultivating a pumpkin large and sturdy enough to serve as a boat,” Kristensen explained.
Despite breaking his own record, Kristensen remains ambitious. He hopes to attempt an even longer journey in the future, potentially next year, with an improved pumpkin and support crew. His determination showcases a unique blend of agricultural skill, maritime navigation, and pure adventurous spirit.
Kristensen’s unconventional record-breaking journey serves as an inspiring reminder that innovation often emerges from unexpected places. By transforming a simple agricultural product into a mode of transportation, he challenges traditional perceptions of what’s possible.
As for future plans, Kristensen is already strategizing his next pumpkin boat expedition, proving that his passion for this extraordinary maritime adventure is far from over.
