San Francisco Crowns a New Drag Laureate: Per Sia Takes the Stage

Per Sia Speaks Berkeley TT 2025

San Francisco has a vibrant new cultural ambassador in Per Sia, the city’s latest Drag Laureate who was officially announced by Mayor Daniel Lurie this week. The trans woman and local drag star will serve a three-year term, continuing the groundbreaking tradition started by her predecessor D’Arcy Drollinger.

Per Sia, known for her electrifying performances at Outside Lands and her work in afterschool arts programs, brings a powerful voice to the role. During her inauguration at Rooftop Elementary School, she passionately addressed the current challenges facing the drag community, stating that their very existence is being “debated and targeted by people who don’t know who we are”.

Her appointment comes at a crucial time for LGBTQ+ representation, especially in a city known for its progressive values. As Drag Laureate, Per Sia will have exciting responsibilities like throwing the first pitch at Giants games, potentially ringing the bell at Warriors games, and emceeing at SF Pride.

Per Sia isn’t just a performer; she’s an educator and activist. Her background includes viral video fame, consistent drag performances, and a commitment to arts education. She’s also no stranger to standing up against homophobic protesters, having faced them courageously during family-oriented events.

The Drag Laureate position, initially a groundbreaking 18-month honorary role, has now expanded to a three-year term. This extension allows for deeper community engagement and more sustained cultural impact.

For those interested in experiencing Per Sia’s talents, event organizers can request her appearance through an online application form. Her selection signals San Francisco’s continued commitment to celebrating diversity, artistic expression, and LGBTQ+ visibility.

As Per Sia steps into this role, she carries not just a crown, but a powerful message of resilience, creativity, and community pride.
