SF's Beloved Noodle Shop Breaks Free from Food Hall Restrictions

The majestic Gare du Sud station in Nice, which is now a beautiful gourmet hall!

San Francisco’s culinary landscape continues to evolve as Momo Noodle, a popular local food concept, announces its departure from Saluhall, the Ikea-owned food court. Founded in 2018 as a food truck, Momo Noodle has become a cherished fixture in the city’s dining scene, but recent restrictions around menu offerings have prompted the restaurant to seek more creative freedom.

Cofounder June Guo shared that Saluhall’s strict guidelines, particularly around meat-to-vegetable ratios, forced them to remove their signature rice-wine pork belly dish. “We were required to keep a meat to veg ratio on our menu,” Guo explained, highlighting the tension between the food hall’s vision and the restaurant’s culinary identity.

The move to 455 Market St. in late September represents more than just a location change. It symbolizes Momo Noodle’s commitment to maintaining its unique flavor profile and responding to the dynamic needs of San Francisco’s dining community. Despite the challenges, Guo remains optimistic about the city’s potential, stating, “We remain incredibly optimistic about San Francisco. We’re thrilled to be part of the city’s revitalization, especially downtown”.

Interestingly, Momo Noodle isn’t alone in navigating these culinary transitions. The food hall has seen other original tenants like La Venganza and Kayma depart, reflecting the ongoing challenges of the post-pandemic dining landscape.

Saluhall maintains that they strive for “balance” in their food selection, carefully considering vendor and guest needs. However, Momo Noodle’s experience underscores the delicate balance between innovative food concepts and institutional restrictions.

As more companies implement return-to-office mandates, Momo Noodle’s new location near Salesforce Park is already experiencing increased foot traffic. This move not only preserves their beloved menu but also demonstrates the resilience of San Francisco’s small business ecosystem.

For local food lovers and supporters of independent restaurants, Momo Noodle’s journey represents a testament to creativity, adaptability, and the ongoing culinary innovation that makes San Francisco’s food scene so vibrant.
