San Francisco’s beloved Castro Theater is getting a major facelift that’s turning heads and sparking conversations across the city. After a complex renovation process that’s gone significantly over budget , now at $41 million instead of the original $15 million estimate , Another Planet Entertainment is preparing to breathe new life into this historic venue.
The transformation isn’t just cosmetic. The main auditorium has been completely leveled, and new tiered platforms with motorized theater seats will soon replace the classic layout. These innovative seats will accommodate both film screenings and live events, offering unprecedented flexibility for the space.
Additional upgrades include movable bars inside the auditorium and a brand new second-floor bar and lounge area. The iconic Art Deco chandelier, carefully removed and restored, is set to be reinstalled, preserving a piece of the theater’s rich historical character.
Bookings are set to begin in March 2026, with the venue already in discussions with longtime partners like Frameline, the LGBTQ film festival. The renovation aims to modernize while respecting the theater’s storied past, promising what Frameline’s executive director Allegra Madsen calls a “magnificent palace”.
However, the renovation hasn’t been without controversy. Electrical system upgrades and street work have delayed the project, and two small businesses adjacent to the theater are facing potential displacement, with local officials working to support their transition.
As San Francisco continues to evolve, the Castro Theater’s renovation represents more than just a building update , it’s a symbol of the city’s commitment to preserving cultural landmarks while adapting to contemporary needs. The theater that has long been a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ culture is poised to remain a vibrant community hub for years to come.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting transformation of one of San Francisco’s most iconic spaces.
