San Francisco’s iconic Castro Theatre has emerged from a jaw-dropping $41 million renovation, ready to reclaim its status as a cultural powerhouse in the city’s historic LGBTQ+ neighborhood. After two years of extensive restoration, the 104-year-old entertainment venue is set to dazzle audiences with its blend of vintage charm and modern functionality.
The reopening weekend kicks off with a sold-out screening of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, a fitting tribute to the theatre’s queer legacy. Mayor Daniel Lurie will lead a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing the venue’s triumphant return to the community.
The renovation has preserved much of the theatre’s historic character while introducing contemporary upgrades. The original 1920s painted cupola remains untouched, having been “preserved in nicotine” from decades of indoor smoking. Original light fixtures have been meticulously cleaned and restored, maintaining the space’s historic integrity.
Concert promoter Another Planet Entertainment has transformed the venue into a multi-purpose entertainment space. The orchestra level now features comfortable, removable seats, while the balcony retains a mix of vintage and modern seating. A new mezzanine bar and flexible downstairs bar add to the venue’s versatility.
Fans of live music and performance will be thrilled by upcoming events. Drag star D’Arcy Drollinger will host a disco-themed reopening bash, and musician Sam Smith is set for a one-month residency. Music lovers can also look forward to the debut of a hybrid digital-pipe organ, which will make its first appearance during a March 17 screening of John Waters’s “Serial Mom”.
The Castro Theatre’s revival represents more than just a renovation, it’s a celebration of San Francisco’s resilient cultural spirit, queer history, and commitment to preserving historic spaces while making them accessible for new generations.
