Basketball superstar Kevin Durant is shaking up the NBA once again, this time trading his Phoenix Suns jersey for the Houston Rockets’ colors in a blockbuster trade that’s sending shockwaves through the league.
The 15-time All-Star and four-time Olympic gold medalist is heading to Texas, returning to a state where he previously played college basketball for the Longhorns. This trade marks Durant’s fifth franchise, following stints with the SuperSonics/Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets, and Phoenix Suns.
Houston is giving up significant assets to acquire Durant, including players Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green, along with six future draft picks - notably the No. 10 selection in this year’s draft. The Rockets, who finished second in the Western Conference last season, are clearly making a bold statement about their championship aspirations.
Durant’s impressive career stats speak volumes: he averages 27.2 points and seven rebounds per game, is a four-time scoring champion, two-time Finals MVP, and one of only eight NBA players to surpass 30,000 career points. His two championship wins with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018 further cement his legendary status.
The move comes after a somewhat disappointing 2½ years with the Phoenix Suns, where Durant didn’t achieve the consistent team success many expected alongside star guards Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
Durant, currently under contract for approximately $50 million next season, will become a free agent in 2026, adding another layer of intrigue to this already exciting trade. For the Rockets, this acquisition represents a potential game-changing moment, injecting veteran leadership and extraordinary talent into their young, promising roster.
As Durant himself cryptically said during a Fanatics Fest panel, “We’re gonna see, man” - a tantalizing hint at the potential transformations ahead for the Houston Rockets.
