Tennis legend Venus Williams returned to the court with an electrifying performance at the DC Open, marking her first tournament appearance in over a year. Teaming up with 23-year-old Hailey Baptiste, Williams dominated the doubles match, defeating Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory.

After a challenging year that included surgery to remove fibroids, Williams approached the tournament with two simple goals: to have fun and to win. Her return was met with thunderous applause from fans, including NBA star Kevin Durant, who attended the match.

“It’s just nice to be able to play,” Williams shared, reflecting on her journey. “Where I am this year is so much different from last year. It’s night and day, being able to prepare for a tournament instead of preparing for surgery”.

The 45-year-old tennis icon showcased her trademark power and skill, high-fiving Baptiste and engaging with the enthusiastic crowd. Her partner, visibly nervous but excited, described the experience as surreal, appreciating the electric atmosphere and the opportunity to play alongside a living legend.

Williams, who has won seven major singles titles and 14 doubles titles with her sister Serena, continues to inspire athletes across generations. Her comeback demonstrates resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to the sport she loves.

Fans can look forward to seeing Williams in singles action, where she is scheduled to face Peyton Stearns, a 23-year-old ranked No. 35, who recently won NCAA singles and team championships.

As Bouchard, who is set to retire after the Montreal tournament, noted, “She’s 14 years older than me and still plugging away. I have nothing but respect for her”.
