California continues to prove that clean energy isn’t just a dream, but a rapidly evolving reality. In the third quarter of 2025, the Golden State hit a groundbreaking milestone by selling 124,755 zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), representing 29.1% of all new car sales - the highest quarterly share in state history.
The surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption comes despite persistent federal challenges, showcasing California’s unwavering commitment to sustainable transportation. With 146 ZEV models now available - up from 105 last year - consumers have more choices than ever before. Of the total ZEVs sold, 108,685 were pure electric vehicles, marking a nearly 30% spike from the previous quarter.
State leaders are making EV ownership increasingly accessible. The California Energy Commission has pioneered first-in-nation EV charger reliability standards and approved infrastructure projects that will significantly expand charging networks. Over 200,000 publicly accessible charging stations now dot the state, with chargers located in grocery stores, parking lots, and even traditional gas stations.
Financial incentives are also making clean cars more attainable. Grants and rebates are available for low-income residents, removing economic barriers to sustainable transportation. The state’s approach goes beyond individual vehicle sales - it’s a comprehensive strategy to transform transportation infrastructure.
This achievement is part of California’s broader climate leadership. The state has simultaneously reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 20% since 2000 while growing its GDP by 78%. In 2023, California was powered by two-thirds clean energy, becoming the largest economy globally to reach such a milestone.
As California continues to innovate, it sends a powerful message: the future of transportation is electric, and that future is happening now.
