A Burning Man Nightmare: Cybertruck Leaves Artist with Devastating Injuries

2024 Tesla Cybertruck

The annual Burning Man festival, known for its radical self-expression and unpredictable moments, took a dark turn this year when Minnesota artist James “JP” Patrick suffered a life-altering accident on the desert playa.

Patrick was meditating near sundown when a Tesla Cybertruck, reportedly functioning as an art car, struck him, crushing both of his feet and requiring immediate medical evacuation. The incident highlights the potential dangers that can emerge in the chaotic environment of Black Rock City.

According to his family’s GoFundMe page, Patrick underwent reconstructive surgery where doctors placed multiple plates and pins in his feet. His current recovery is painstaking, with physical therapy currently limited to simply wiggling his toes. Despite the severity of his injuries, medical professionals note that his vital organs and other bones remain intact.

The artist, who was traveling with his wife and two children, was reportedly wearing a light and was sober at the time of the accident. His family describes the incident as a “genuine accident,” though the details surrounding the Cybertruck’s involvement remain unclear.

Patrick’s recovery will be extensive, with significant risks of infection and ongoing pain management. His GoFundMe page has been established to help support his medical expenses and rehabilitation, underscoring the financial challenges that can accompany unexpected medical emergencies.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of large-scale events like Burning Man, where art, technology, and human interaction can sometimes collide with unexpected and devastating consequences.
