Berkeley’s Kuku Studios is about to make animation history with their first full-length feature film, “In Your Dreams,” dropping on Netflix this November. Founded by three former Pixar colleagues, this innovative studio is set to capture hearts with a poignant story about sibling connection and family resilience.

The film follows 12-year-old Stevie and her 8-year-old brother Elliott on a surreal journey through their dreamscape, where they seek the mythical Sandman’s help to save their parents’ struggling marriage. Co-founder and CEO Alex Woo drew inspiration from his own childhood experiences, weaving personal vulnerability into the narrative’s emotional core.

With Marvel star Simu Liu lending his voice to a struggling musician father, the film promises authentic storytelling that resonates beyond traditional animated fare. Woo’s commitment to emotional truth shines through, creating characters that feel genuinely human despite their fantastical surroundings.

Kuku Studios, which has already found success with the Emmy-winning children’s series “Go! Go! Cory Carson,” represents a significant milestone for Asian American representation in animation. The studio’s location in the Zaentz Media Center symbolizes their deep connection to the Bay Area’s rich cinematic heritage.

“In Your Dreams” represents more than just a movie, it’s a testament to the power of storytelling that embraces complexity, vulnerability, and hope. By exploring universal themes through a child’s imaginative lens, Kuku Studios is carving out a unique space in animated storytelling.

For Millennials and Gen Z viewers seeking narratives that challenge traditional animated storytelling, “In Your Dreams” offers a refreshing and emotionally nuanced experience that goes far beyond typical cartoon fare.
